I've got this new computer, now what do I do with it? I'm sure you've been told a few dozen times what a powerful machine it is and you'll love it. They're right. There's email, World Wide Web, Newsgroups, etc. Begin with email. Correspond with relatives and friends. It's so convenient. Visit when you want to. It's not intrusive like the telephone. When you have nothing in particular to say, send a joke. Try surfing on the net a little each day. Follow links and see where it takes you. Explore the search engines for specific topics. Try changing the search terms just a little. You won't believe what's out there.

What is the internet? The internet is the physical connection of all the computers worldwide.

What is the world wide web?The world wide web is the collection of documents that some or most of these computers use to transfer information to each other with the use of http (hypertext transfer protocol).

What is HTML?HTML stands for hypertext markup language. It is the method used to put structure into how something is transmitted across the internet.

What is a link? It is a spot on the page (usually a word, group of words or an image) which when clicked on by the mouse, allows you to move to some other page or website. This is what makes the internet so powerful.

What is a url? URL is "uniform resource locator." It means the "address" of a web page on the Internet. It can be a series of numbers or words divided by dots. Every web page or file (sound, graphics, etc.) has a unique url.

What is a domain name? A domain name is a specific place on the internet using words for its url. The domain can contain subdomains and other computers. A domain is housed on a specific server.

Why do I get an error message? There are error messages for every conceivable reason but the most common one is when a webpage is no longer at the specified url or, heaven forbid, you entered the wrong url.
